Soil Pollution Is Just As Terrible As Air Pollution
Friday, February 17th, 2012While we often hear about air pollution, we do not get a lot of information concerning soil pollution. Simply because people don’t have a good deal of information regarding soil pollution, does not mean that it isn’t just as vital as any other type of pollution. It’s tougher to detect as it takes place under ground and isn’t that easy to see. There are actually tests that could be run to show you if the soil is healthy enough to be used.
Contaminated water can easily seep into the soil making the soil impure. When this happens the soil becomes less productive because the plants, flowers or trees do not grow as well. Nowadays, most of the vegetables and fruit we eat have been impacted by polluted soil. Air pollution can’t get better as the plants are not able to take out the carbon monoxide in the air due to soil pollution. Much of the soil pollution are due to carelessness and blunders we humans made. Chemicals inside storage tanks are put underground, and they quite often leak, making it possible for the chemicals to flow all through the soil. This has made plants to simply stop growing and making the area uninhabitable.
Landfills is yet another example of how pollutants seep into the soil. In earlier times trash from companies and individuals was dumped in landfills, that did very little to preserve the land. Water from rain or snow would carry these deadly toxins into the soil. The various chemicals then fall into underground water tables or rivers and start spreading across an area. At least landfills are currently doing lots of things to protect the soil from the more dangerous chemicals, such as putting them in separate areas that have been lined with protective substances.
Inorganic pesticides have been sprayed on the land for several years, which has also caused a lot of harm to the soil. Quite a few groups have been lobbying the government for some time in order to protect the soil from harmful chemicals. Through more strict laws on certain pesticide sprays and the surge in organic farming, there’s hope that soil pollution will improve. Companies are initiating changes at the same time like using biodegradable material. The nation with most severe problem is the US. Soil pollution in America are a result of no respect for the environment and fast advancement in technology.
Nevertheless, as more people find out about soil pollution, the more action is being taken to solve the problem. There are programs appearing throughout the country to deal with and work on the soil pollution problem. It is great that there are many people who are being more health conscious and are concerned about the soil.
